Welcome to “Destino Maya” 🇬🇹 An agency to discover the magic, history, and soul of Guatemala. Who's behind it? I am a young Guatemalan woman passionate about my country, its colors, its people, and its traditions. This new project, which began in March 2025, was born from the desire to share how beautiful it is to live and explore Guatemala. I wanted to include a blog section because I think it would be truly valuable for us to connect. - Lake Atitlán
Lake Atitlán, located in the municipality of Panajachel in the department of Sololá, is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. This natural paradise, surrounded by majestic volcanoes and picturesque indigenous villages, is a must-visit destination for those seeking adventure, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. A Lake with History Formed thousands of years ago in the crater of a volcano, Lake Atitlán is approximately 340 meters deep, making it the deepest lake in Central America. Its name comes from the Nahuatl language and means "between the waters." The Towns Surrounding It The lake is surrounded by 12 towns, each with its own identity and traditions. The most popular are: Panajachel: The main entrance to the lake, known for its handicraft market and the lively atmosphere of Santander Street. What to do: Stroll down Santander Street, shop for handicrafts, and take a boat tour. Ideal for: First-time travelers and those seeking comfort. San Juan la Laguna: An artistic town featuring paintings by local artists and a beautiful viewpoint. What to do: Natural weaving tour, hike to viewpoints, and local coffee tasting. Ideal for: Art lovers, lovers of authenticity, and local culture.l. Santiago Atitlán: Known for its strong Tz'utujil heritage and veneration of Saint Maximón. What to do: Visit Maximón, explore the church, and explore Tz'utujil Mayan history. Ideal for: Cultural explorers and the curious. Santa Cruz, San Pedro, Jaibalito, San Antonio, and more… Each town has its own unique vibe. From total tranquility to the nightlife in San Pedro. 📌 Tips for your visit How to get there: From Guatemala City or Antigua, you can take a tourist shuttle or bus to Panajachel.
